The Tolstoy Train - Most Novel Journey from Helsinki to Moscow
The luxury overnight Tolstoy train was named after the author of the famous Russian novel, “War and Peace”, whose name depicts two opposites much like the cities it connects. This Helsinki - Moscow train takes you across Northern Europe in speed and safety, with Slavic hospitality, classic Russian furnishings and a professional staff all in a civilized manner. It takes the train 15 hrs 33 min to pass 1073 km and there is 1 daily departure (Sun - Fri).
Prices vary as several classes suit the needs of every traveler, from budget economy to luxury. At the lower end of that range, 2nd class costs around $200. For economic travel, 2nd class sleepers contain 4 berths, each sold individually. If you travel alone then you will be sharing it with other travelers. Cozy and simple, bedding is provided usually for a small cost and snacks and beverages also are available for a small price.
The 1st class sleepers contain only 2 berths and have air conditioning, locked doors for extra privacy, panoramic windows for wonderful views and some extra perks such as paid bedding and individual reading lamps, to name a few. A truly cozy option. The next class is the same cabin as 1st class, but solely for yourself.
The Premium class deluxe sleeping cabins are spacious and true luxury on wheels. They contain all the space you would expect from a luxury cabin, a private shower, toilet, DVD entertainment, comfortable slippers, a towel, and complimentary drinks and snacks. The price for the premium cabin is per cabin and each cabin can accommodate 2 people.
The train has a finely decorated restaurant car open to all passengers, accepting Euros, US Dollars and Rubles, but unfortunately no credit cards. It is quite spacious with 24 comfortable seats in the dining room, partially separated from the coffee shop containing 17 more seating options – 3 unique booths and a line of “bar-style” seats. In the business class car, you can order meals to be delivered to its bar compartment.
At the border passport control and customs are taken care of onboard. If you are traveling in a group, book the special-purpose car to pass the journey in privacy in a meeting or socializing. You can also order high-quality catering services for such arrangements.
The cars are air-conditioned and include a smoking area. The 1st and business class compartments have electrical outlets, the 2nd class cars feature one compartment for physically challenged passengers with 1 lower and 1 upper berth, space for a wheelchair and a spacious private toilet. Currency exchange is provided in Finland between Vainikkala and Kouvola as well as Tax-Free refund.
