Russian Christmas Tree Decoration

Russian children and their parents love decorating Christmas trees. It's called Novogodnaya Elka and one of the most popular decorations is called Snezhinka (a snow flake). It's really easy to make one yourself: all you need is paper and scissors.

Russian New Year Recipe

There's one dish that is an absolute must on any Christmas and New Year table in Russia. It practically symbolizes winter holidays in Russia. We are talking about the legendary Olivier Salad. The recipe is simple: all you'll need is diced boiled potatoes, carrots, dill pickles, green peas, eggs, diced ham or bologna sausage and mayonnaise for dressing.

Other names for this dish are Russian salad or Stolichny salad, but in Russia it's called Olivier, and for a good reason. It was first created by a Russian chef of Belgian descent (Olivier Lucien) in 1860. He owned the Hermitage restaurant in central Moscow and this salad was one of signature dishes. However, the original recipe differs from modern variations a lot.

We wish you and those around you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!
