Nizhny Novgorod is a city of transition. The third largest city in Russia, it frequently gets upstaged by its powerhouse sister cities, Moscow and St. Petersburg. This shift of focus has allowed Nizhny Novgorod to become the futuristic city, a land where the totalitarian oppression of Russia's past is being eased out in favor of democracy. Russia's past may have begun in its two capitals, but Russia's future truly lies in Nizhny Novgorod! Like most great cities, Nizhny was established because of its geographical position on the confluence of two important rivers. Founded in 1221, it escaped Mongol devastation due to its seemingly insignificant role in everyday functions of the medieval centuries. This allowed it, like Moscow, to flourish after the Mongol rule, and it became a stronghold of trade and protection in later years. For a brief time under the Soviet regime the city was renamed Gorky after a famous author born here in 1868. Despite this tie to the arts, Nizhny was more a military city and remained closed for tourists during the Soviet rule.

In 1990 the city regained both its original name and free open status. Nizhny Novgorod thrives owing to its booming IT industry. It houses a number of software development companies as well as more than twenty-five scientific research and development institutes. It is a hub of education, with thirty-three academies and universities. It is truly a promising city which is destined a bright future! One of the most notable accomplishments of Nizhny Novgorod is its inclusion in the celebration of the 2018 World Cup. A few of the games will be hosted in this city in an as-yet-to-be-built stadium. Knowing this city's attraction to technology and advancement, its stadium will be a site to remember! With a just as an affluent past as Moscow and St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod tops them with its powerful link to the developing technological industries. In vibrant contrast to the abundant history that is the focus of most of Russia's cities, Nizhny is purely future, and gleams as bright as Russia's upcoming years.
