Modern day Omsk is the administrative center of the Siberian Cossack Host and Omsk Region of Russia. With a population over 1 million inhabitants it is the 2nd largest town of Siberia after Novosibirsk. During the Russian Civil War 1918 - 1920 it was the capital of anti-Bolshevik movement with the legendary admiral Alexander Kolchak standing at the head of it.

During its long history Omsk has changed many faces: it was a shield from the nomads for the Russian Empire, and a city of convicts. Fyodor Dostoevsky who spent three years here devoted his story "The House of the Dead" to this city.
