Moscow - Sochi Double-Decker Train
In 2014 the Russian gem of the Black Sea, the city of Sochi, hosted the most anticipated sporting event of the year - the Winter Olympics. The preparations were well under way not only in terms of creating new infrastructure, but in the transport system innovations as well. In autumn 2014 the first double-decker train in Russia was introduced by Russian railways to run between Moscow and Sochi.
In November 2010, OJSC "Federal Passenger Company" (a subsidiary of JSC "Russian Railways") entered into an agreement with the OJSC "Tver Carriage Works" for the purchase of 50 double-decker carriages, including 38 compartment coaches, 4 sleeping coaches, 4 train staff coaches and 4 dining cars. Out of these 50 carriages three double-decker trains were formed. These Russian trains are starting to run between Moscow and Adler since November 1, 2013 and will become not only more capacious, but also the fastest and the cheapest trains on the route.
Each train consists of 15 carriages: 12 compartment coaches, 1 sleeping coach, 1 train staff coach and 1 dining car. Depending on the class, each compartment coach is equipped with 16 two- or four-seat compartments - 8 on the lower deck and 8 on the upper deck. Thus, this train accommodates twice as many passengers as a standard one - 64 seats against 36. It means that the cost of the new train tickets will be approximately 30% lower for both compartment and sleeping coaches as compared to the one-deck train. Sleeping coaches can accommodate 30 passengers while train staff coaches have seats for 50 people. As a result, the total carrying capacity of this double-decker train is about 850 passengers. The dining car can simultaneously accommodate up to 50 visitors: 44 people in the dining room and 6 people in the bar. Moreover, besides general compartments there are compartments for disabled people with separate toilet facilities that are arranged in train staff coaches and equipped with special devices.
The efficiency of these trains is so obvious that OJSC "Federal Passenger Company" has ordered 15 more double-deck coaches with seats, that will be used in trans-regional train sets. An economy class coach will have 104 seats on each deck while business class coach will accommodate only 29 people. Mass production of these coaches is scheduled for 2014.
- Besides 1st class and 2nd class compartment coaches, the double-decker train is also provided a sleeping coach, a train staff coach with a compartment for disabled people and a dining car with a bar
- Air-conditioning and heating system in each carriage
- Internet Wi-Fi on board
- Passenger reading light
- Sockets for battery chargers and laptops in each compartment
- Electronic information boards that display outside air temperature and the nearest settlement
